Portrait Course - 4 Days of Oil Painting from a Live Model

Course Description

Designed as an intensive in order to capture the likeness of a sitter with accuracy and

precision, this workshop is intended for students who want to improve their core understanding

of drawing, anatomy and the medium of oil painting. During the course, we will complete one

portrait (and some sketches) from the live model. The workshop focuses strongly on the

foundations of drawing and painting, making use of a limited palette to deepen the student’s

ability to translate value, light and color into a finished portrait.

What the course will look like

Day 1 – Foundations and the Block-In

An overview of portrait painting, theory, and historical examples. Introduction to materials and

a detailed breakdown of the Zorn Palette and its logic. A demo follows and a first imprimatura

and block-in of the figure is completed by the students.

Day 2 – We start the day by adjusting drawing and proportions to the imprimatura. This is

followed by Value, Color, and the First Layer.

Theory: mixing paint and establishing a value scale. The first layer of paint is applied to the

canvas. A structured block-in of values in the portrait gives the work its tonal foundation.

Day 3 — Value and color refinement. Breaking the form down into smaller planes, adjusting

value and color relationships.

Day 4 – Refinement and the Focal Point

Refining the smaller planes and forms of the face and the fall of light and turning of forms.

Establishing a focal point – where precise observation meets deliberate decision.

Kursbeschreibung

Dieser als Intensivkurs konzipierte Workshop zielt darauf ab, das Abbild eines Modells mit Genauigkeit und Präzision zu erfassen. Er richtet sich an Teilnehmende, die ihr grundlegendes Verständnis von Zeichnung, Anatomie und dem Medium der Ölmalerei vertiefen möchten. Im Verlauf des Kurses werden wir ein Porträt (sowie einige Skizzen) nach dem Modell anfertigen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Grundlagen der Zeichnung und Malerei; durch die Verwendung einer begrenzten Farbpalette wird die Fähigkeit geschult, Tonwerte, Licht und Farbe in ein fertiges Porträt umzusetzen.

Kursablauf

Tag 1 – Grundlagen und Grobanlage (Block-in)

Überblick über Porträtmalerei, Theorie und historische Beispiele. Einführung in die Materialien sowie detaillierte Erläuterung der Zorn-Palette und ihrer Logik. Es folgt eine Demonstration; anschließend erstellen die Teilnehmenden eine erste Imprimatur und die Grobanlage (Block-in) der Figur.

Tag 2 – Anpassung von Zeichnung und Proportionen an die Imprimatur. Danach: Tonwerte, Farbe und die erste Farbschicht.

Theorie: Farbmischung und Erstellung einer Tonwertskala. Die erste Farbschicht wird auf die Leinwand aufgetragen. Eine strukturierte Grobanlage der Tonwerte im Porträt bildet das tonale Fundament der Arbeit.

Tag 3 – Verfeinerung von Tonwerten und Farben. Zerlegung der Form in kleinere Flächen sowie Abstimmung der Tonwert- und Farbverhältnisse.

Tag 4 – Ausarbeitung und Fokuspunkt

Verfeinerung der kleineren Flächen und Gesichtsformen sowie Darstellung von Lichteinfall und Formübergängen. Festlegung eines Fokuspunktes – dort, wo präzise Beobachtung auf bewusste Entscheidung trifft.
